What types of e-mail services does Evolution Hosting offer?

The following examples use the domain www.mydomain.com.

1. JavaMail

The full JavaMail API is supported. The smtp host name is available via the system property ejip.smtp.

2. Aliases (a.k.a. forwarding)

For example, mail sent to webmaster@mydomain.com will forward to greatprogrammer@yahoo.com. Evolution Hosting supports unlimited numbers of aliases. The Evolution Hosting Console has tools to list, create, update, and delete aliases. Changes may be done at any time of day and take effect immediately.

3. Distribution Lists

For example, mail sent to support@mydomain.com will forward to a list of e-mail addresses. The list may include other lists which makes it easy to organize related groups of e-mail addresses. Evolution Hosting supports unlimited numbers of lists. The Evolution Hosting Console has tools to list, create, update, and delete lists. Changes may be done at any time of day and take effect immediately.

4. IMAP

For example, mail sent to webmaster@mydomain.com will be stored in an IMAP mailbox on mydomain.com's IMAP server. Evolution Hosting supports unlimited numbers of mailboxes. The Evolution Hosting Console has tools to list, create, update, and delete mailboxes. Changes may be done at any time of day and take effect immediately. Disk quotas and password management is included. Many e-mail clients, including MS Outlook and Netscape Communicator, support IMAP mailboxes.

5. Webmail

Webmail is offered in addition to IMAP. It is available at webmail.Evolution Hosting. Webmail and e-mail clients (e.g. Outlook and Netscape) can be used at the same time. For example, you can use Webmail while travelling and Netscape while in the office.

6. Evolution Hosting E-Mail APIs

All of the e-mail maintenance tools for aliases, distribution lists, IMAP, and webmail (create, update, delete, and list) are available to customers via an API. The API is implemented using simple HTTP GET requests to the Evolution Hosting console. Fully functional admin screens are provided. Complete java source code is included so that customers may integrate e-mail capability into their own applications.

How much does e-mail cost at Evolution Hosting?

Evolution Hosting e-mail is divided into six categories, each with different prices:

1. JavaMail API

Use of the JavaMail API is free and included with every Evolution Hosting account.

2. Aliases (a.k.a. forwarding)

Aliases are free and included with every Evolution Hosting account.

Cost = $0

3. Distribution Lists

Lists are free and included with every Evolution Hosting account.

Cost = $0

4. IMAP

In summary, for an Evolution Hosting account with five mailboxes, Evolution Hosting would charge a flat $20 setup fee for general e-mail capability on the first month (this is not per account, just $20 flat).

Ongoing, the fee would be $20/month for the overall IMAP and Webmail server, in addition to the per account fee of $3/month.

So, for five e-mail accounts, the overall cost would be $55 the first month, and $35 each month thereafter.

Note that the above option on an Evolution Hosting Dedicated Server package would be a flat fee of $100.00/month with no per account fee.

How do I configure Outlook 2000 for IMAP?
The following instructions include examples for www.mydomain.com. Substitute your domain accordingly.

1. Start Outlook
2. Click on Tools | Accounts to get the Internet Accounts dialog box.
3. Click on Add | Mail
4. Enter your name. Any text may be entered here. Click Next.
5. Enter your incoming e-mail address. For example javarules@mydomain.com. Click Next
6. Select IMAP server as your incoming mail server.
7. The incoming e-mail server is the same as your registered domain: www.mydomain.com
8. The outgoing e-mail server must be supplied to you by your local computer administrator or ISP (Internet Service Provider. Earthlink, MSN, and AOL are ISPs, for example).
   
   • MSN: smtp.email.msn.com
   • Earthlink: vipmail.earthlink.net
   • AOL: none that we know of
9. The account name is a concatenation of e-mail name and domain name: javarules_www_mydomain_com. Replace all periods (.) in the domain with underscores (_). Join the e-mail name and domain with an underscore (_).
10. Use the password as entered into the console section Server | Mail
11. Do not check SPA. SPA is MS Windows challenge / response. Click Next.
12. Choose the pre-selected connection method. Click Next.
13. Click Finish
14. Click on Tools | Send/Recieve to check your mail.
15. The new IMAP folder is located in the left-hand pane at the very top level. It is at the same level as Outlook Today.

How do I configure Netscape Communicator 4.x for IMAP?

1. Start Netscape Communicator
2. Click on Communicator | Messenger
3. Verify the version by clicking on Help | About Communicator. It should be version 4.x (e.g 4.72)
4. Click on Edit | Preferences
5. Click on Identity. Fill out Name, E-mail address, Reply-to, Organization, and Signature file
6. Click on Mail Servers
7. Click on Add
8. There are 3 tabs to edit.
9. Tab 1: General
   
   1. Server Name: www.mydomain.com
   2. Server Type: IMAP
   3. User Name: support_www_mydomain_com
   4. Check remember password
   5. Check: check every 15 (or whatever you like) minutes
10. Tab 2: IMAP:
    1. UNcheck "mark new folders for offline download
    2. Uncheck "use secure connection"
    3. When I delete a message: "move it to the trash folder"
    4. Check: clean up ("Expunge") inbox on exit
    5. Check: empty trash on exit
11. Tab 3: Advanced
    1. IMAP Server directory: leave blank
    2. Check: show only subscribed folders
    3. Check: Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages
    4. Personal Namespace: leave blank
    5. Public: leave blank
    6. Other users: leave blank
    7. Check: allow server to override these namespaces
12. Click OK to close the Add Server Dialog Box.
13. You may be prompted for a password now. Go ahead and enter it.
14. Outgoing mail server: it is probably not mail.Evolution Hosting unless special arrangements have been made. It is the e-mail server supplied to you by your local system administrator or ISP (Internet Service Provider).
    Note: In the future Evolution Hosting plans to offer outgoing mail at mail.Evolution Hosting and secured with a userid and password.

15. Click OK to close preferences.
16. Your new mailbox should appear in the left-hand Names pane. Click on the plus signs (+) to expand to see the Inbox and mail messages.

E-Mail I try to delete is not actually deleted. How can I delete e-mail forever?
Since e-mail is stored on the server, not on your desktop, deletion is a two-step process: 1) mark mail for deletion and 2) purge e-mail marked for deletion.
In Outlook 2000 this is accomplished by first deleting e-mail as usual, followed by the menu option Edit | Purge Deleted Messages.
In Netscape 4.x this is accomplished by first deleting e-mail as usual, followed by the menu option File | Compact this folder.

How do I make IMAP function in Outlook like popmail (keep the messages locally)?
Making IMAP function on a local basis involves creating an Outlook rule to move all messages coming in from the IMAP account to the traditional Outlook Inbox folder. Messages will still also be delivered to the IMAP Inbox, where they will be marked for deletion. These steps enable off-line or disconnected operation, whereas the IMAP Inbox requires a connection. Here are the steps:

1. Click on the standard Outlook Inbox folder (not the IMAP Inbox)
2. Click on the Tools drop-down menu and select the Rules Wizard.
3. Click the New button
4. Click on "check messages when they arrive"
5. Click the Next button
6. Select the checkbox "when received through the specified account"
7. Click on specified in the rule description text-box
8. Select the IMAP Account from the drop-down box
9. Click the Next button
10. Select the checkbox "move it to the specified folder"
11. Select the standard Outlook Inbox from the directory tree
12. Click the Next button
13. There is nothing to do on this screen, because exceptions are not required for this rule
14. Click the Next button
15. Name the rule
16. Click the Finish button
